Quality culture. This is the topic we are going to explore together with you at the VCK Conference on Thursday 21 November 2019.

Programme

Benedikt Sommerhoff will be keynote speaker at the Quality Qulture conference on November 21. The conference will last the whole day. Throughout the day you will be able to meet with fellow-quality managers during the coffee breaks, the lunch and the reception at the end of the event. All drinks and food are obviously included in you registration fee.

Benedikt Sommerhoff: It’s hard to handle the soft. - How to affect corporate culture?

[Keynote, English] Organisational culture is the most important supporting and obstructing factor for the quality capability of an organisation. Nevertheless we are used to focus on so called hard aspects, on processes and technology. We quality managers appreciate the importance of quality awareness and failure culture. But we are lacking understanding and means to address culture adequately and sustainably.

Organisational sociology has come to a deep understanding of quality culture and its interdependence with the formal side of the organisation. What we establish on the formal side, the management system, largely effects the informal side, the culture.

Many resulting effects are unintentional and undesired. Formal interventions trigger informal evasive movements of the people. They constitute unauthorised but useful self-management on the one hand, but violate rules on the other hands to the point of useful illegality. Excessive legal, normative and customer regulations and requirements worsen the situation.

They provoke overformalisation and cause culturally unreflected intervention in times where quick innovation dynamics rather require agile organisations. But we can use the understanding of the interrelation between formal and informal side of the organisation to modernise and refine quality management. An agile quality management and its positioning as organisational development can be the keys towards positively affecting organisational culture. Finally we can outline no less than a new quality management approach.

With his team and DGQ’s working groups he identifies trends and dynamics, that challenge quality management and quality assurance. He works on new QM & QA approaches for the world 4.0.

Benedikt Sommerhoff: The art of deformalisation – how to establish agile and lean QM systems

[Workshop, English] Over-formalisation of our organisations leads towards people bypassing their formal rules. That undermines management systems. The need for agility on dynamic markets and in the disruptive environment of our world 4.0 even deepens the conflict with over-formalized legislation, excessive sectoral and technical standards and bureaucratic management systems.

We urgently need to redesign our management systems in order to create agile and lean settings that run smoothly and that reduce the gap between documented and real processes, between legality and “useful illegality”.

The workshop shall identify the gap, its sources and together the participants shall find approaches to create lean, accepted and functioning management systems.

The Perception of Quality and how to Support Quality Culture by Digitalisation

Ever since W. Edwards Deming stated that "Quality is everyone's responsibility", quality experts have spent a lot of energy to apply this idea in their companies.What are the results today?
